Geekbench removed four Galaxy S flagships from its list because a big reason

Updated: Mar 8, 2022

If you don’t know Samsung was recently caught throttling more than 10,000 apps last week and this behavior is the reason why Geekbench delists four Galaxy S flagships.

Samsung's Game Optimizing Service (GOS) app, which is listed on the App Store to manage gaming apps to either prevent overheating issues or to give you peak performance, was found to be limiting the performance of many non-gaming apps as well

But believe it or not Samsung left out the benchmarking apps like 3DMark and Geekbench from the list. That is why these benchmarking apps results were not impacted. That means benchmarking apps are not showing real life performance of some Samsung phones.

With the One UI 4.0 update, Samsung also made it hard for users to disable the GOS app. But Samsung in response said that GOS optimizes CPU and GPU performance to prevent overheating during long gaming sessions and also said Samsung will roll out a software update to enable or disable GOS by the users. Samsung didn’t talk about the non-gaming apps that are getting throttled by GOS.

According to GeekBench this is considered as a form of benchmark manipulation. I can agree on that. The Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, Galaxy S20, and Galaxy S10 series were found to be using GOS and So Geekbench has delisted them. This isn’t new from smartphone brands. Most infamous one is in 2017, it was reported that Apple was throttling down older iPhones to compensate low battery health and Apple had to pay a big price for that. I wasn’t expecting this from Samsung, but ya at least it got exposed early.
