Samsung may take Apple's approach to improve Exynos
Although Samsung has been trying so much to make their Exynos chips perform as good as possible to compete with Apple and Qualcomm. But still it wasn’t enough to compete.
Two years back, Samsung abandoned its Mongoose cores in favor of ARM's cores with the launch of Exynos 2100. Then with their latest flagship chip, the Exynos 2200 they even upgraded the GPU thanks to the recent collaboration with AMD. But that’s still not enough. But now Samsung is considering to improve the performance of its Exynos processors.
According to Korean outlet Inews24 reports, Samsung is planning to develop chipsets exclusively for its smartphones. If you don’t know, according to leaker Ice Universe, Samsung's LSI division, which makes chips, does not have a very close relationship with Samsung's mobile unit like Apple does. That means the Samsung MX unit is just another customer for the LSI Division just like Vivo is to them. So Samsung MX units buys the chip from LSI division just like they buy from Qualcomm.
President and Head of Samsung's MX Business TM Roh has apparently said during a town hall meeting when an employee asked about the game optimizing service (GOS) controversy, that Samsung will now make processors specifically for Galaxy phones.
Samsung was massively criticized for not being transparent with customers about performance throttling. It has even affected the image and demand for the Galaxy S22 series which is one of the best android phone series in the market.
The Exynos models usually suffers from variety of issues aside from thermal throttling problems unlike the Qualcomm Snapdragon equipped models. These are the reasons why Samsung may now take the same approach as Apple in terms of developing the chips. That means these chips will be built to meet the needs of its Galaxy phones and hopefully they will be enough efficient.
This will always be a welcome change.
We are also hearing that Samsung will team up with Qualcomm or MediaTek to build the new chips. Everything will be clear in the coming months. We can hope that these chips will be revealed at the time of Galaxy S23 series next year.
