Samsung unveiled the 5G Exynos 2200 with Xclipse GPU bases on AMD RDNA2

Updated: Jan 21, 2022

Samsung introduced today the Exynos 2200 - its latest flagship chipset that will power the Galaxy S22 smartphones and Galaxy Tab S8 series in certain markets. The new SoC will feature a custom-made GPU called Xclipse 920 based on the AMD RDNA2 architecture. Thats why it will be able to feature advanced features such as ray tracing and variable rate shading on mobile. It’s is the first chip to do so.

The Exynos 2200 is built by Samsung Foundry using its 4nm process node as noted by Yongin Park,

According to President of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics, Mr. Park, "with the Xclipse, our new mobile GPU built with RDNA 2 graphics technology from the industry leader AMD, the Exynos 2200 will redefine mobile gaming experience, aided by enhanced graphics and AI performance. As well as bringing the best mobile experience to the users, Samsung will continue its efforts to lead the journey in logic chip innovation."

According to Samsung Xclipse mobile GPU based on AMD RDNA2 architecture is a hybrid GPU that is sitting somewhere in between mobile graphics and console graphics. Samsung says, "Like an eclipse, the Xclipse 920 GPU will bring an end to the old era of mobile gaming and mark the start of an exciting new chapter." Ray tracing technology, was only available on PCs, laptops, and gaming consoles but thanks to Exynos 2200 it will be making its way to mobiles for the first time.

Ray tracing is a technology that simulates the real-life behavior of light as it bounces off surfaces and creates shadows. Variable rate shading is another technology implemented in PC and console games. It allows developers to apply lower shading to areas where quality won't be affected, that will improve frame rate and the smoothness of the gameplay.

Exynos 2200 is also one of the first chips integrating Armv9 CPU cores. It will feature the same 1+3+4 cluster design. As for the cores, it will feature powerful Cortex-X2 core as the primary CPU core then there would be three high performance cores based on Cortex-A710 and four high efficiency cores based on Cortex-A510. The SoC with brand-new GPU, improved CPU and a powerful NPU it will be great mobile SoC.

The chip's newest NPU is able to provide 2x AI performence over last year's Exynos 2100. The Exynos 2200’s image signal processor (ISP) architecture can support the latest image sensors for ultra-high resolution of up to 200 megapixel (MP), 8K video recording, At 30 frames-per- second (fps), the ISP supports up to 108 MP in single camera mode, and 64+36Mp in dual camera mode. It can also support 4K displays with refresh rate at up to 120Hz or QHD+ ones at up to 144Hz.

Also, the Exynos 2200 integrates a fast 3GPP Release 16 5G modem supporting both sub-6GHz and mmWave (millimeter Wave) spectrum bands.

At the end they said The Exynos 2200 is currently in mass production.
